the 411 on SEO (but I made it easy for you)

August 16, 2024

I know you've heard of SEO a lot, and if I were to guess, you nod along when it's mentioned but you still find it a bit confusing. I'm here to help!

SEO? don't know her

Guess what? I just recently got SEO certified through Hubspot Academy, and I’m super excited to share what I’ve learned. Before I took this course, I had a basic understanding of what SEO was, but wanted to learn more about how to apply it here and with our clients.

what is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization, and if I could simplify this to just one sentence it would be this: it makes your website easier to find when people search for things online. The reason we use SEO is to help your website show up higher in search engine results without having to pay for it to appear higher on search engines (with ads). By using keywords and phrases that are commonly searched for, you can allow yourself to gain more traction by being higher up on the search results.

it's all about keywords

The most important thing you want to keep in mind when optimizing your page for SEO is your selection of keywords. Keywords are words or phrases that have significance (significance = many people searching for them) when it comes to looking things up online. Like me, you're probably thinking how the heck do I know what keywords to use? Fret no longer! There are already tools made so you don't have to spend hours searching for these keywords. Many tools can be used to help your search go smoother for keywords, some of these tools include: Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or SEMrush.

on-page optimization

Next, you want to optimize directly on your website, or on-page optimization. This is all about improving the parts of your website that you can control to help it rank higher in search results. This means making sure your page titles, headings, and descriptions include important keywords that people might search for. You also want your content to be clear, useful, and easy to read, with keywords naturally included. By doing these things, your website becomes more attractive to search engines, which can lead to more people finding and visiting it.

now what?

Now that you have a better understanding of what SEO is and why it’s important, go ahead and try it out on your website. Start by researching the right keywords, and optimizing your website's content accordingly. With these SEO basics under your belt, you’ll be well on your way to boosting your site’s visibility and getting more traffic.

Happy optimizing!
