do you really need a brand photoshoot?

February 21, 2025

I have a feeling you already know this (otherwise you wouldn't be here). Regardless, I'll break it down—so keep reading.

the answer is yes, duh.

There is *so* much data to back me up here that it's overwhelming, so I'll try to keep it as concise as possible. But before we get started, I want us to do an exercise together. Think of your favorite brand (your favorite clothing brand, a product you can't live without, or anything of the sort), and now think of how their website, social media channels, TV ads, or even billboards would look without good photos. Yeah, exactly.

and now, the data:

Statistics show that products with high-quality product photography enjoy far better performance. Studies show:

  • High-quality brand images capture attention and promote trust
  • 75% of online shoppers rely on product photos when deciding on a potential purchase.
  • Approximately 56% of consumers say they are more likely to purchase from a brand if the pictures look perfect.
  • Listings with high-quality images receive 94% more views than those with low-quality images.
  • Businesses with high-quality photos experience higher conversion rates.
  • Brands featuring professional photographs experience a 33% higher conversion rate compared to those with lower-quality images.
  • Shopify found that adding high-resolution product images can increase conversions by 30% or more.

Furthermore, if you sell a commodity product, professional photography can help you stand out among other retailers, and even be the reason people are willing to pay that bit extra to buy from you instead of a competitor!

Even if you don't sell a product and offer a service—proper brand photography significantly boosts sales by connecting a customer to your brand. Doing so builds trust and creates a memorable brand image, which leads to increased conversions (more money) and customer loyalty (for more time).

'ok, I'm convinced—but where and how do I use these photos?'

Literally everywhere! JK, but not.

  • On social media: 70% of people search for brands and companies on Instagram before turning to Google, so it's important to use your photos on your social content. Create REEL covers, use them for carousels, update your profile picture, and even use footage from your photoshoot as b-roll for REELs with text over them.
  • On your website: using stock photos on your website should be illegal (there, I said it). People can instantly tell, and you lose credibility. Recreate your own stock photos during your shoot!
  • Email newsletters: hi, hello—have you noticed it on our weekly e-blasts? Incorporate these throughout your email designs to further connect with your audience as they're reading through your content.
  • Decks or presentations: this is a great way to get strangers to know, like, and trust you quicker. Add these throughout your presentations, pitches, or even internal resources

'I can't afford a photographer, can I DIY this?'

You sure can!

  • Natural light is your best friend, but bring some backup: position yourself or your products near a window or invest in an ring light for soft, even lighting
  • Invest in a simple backdrop or find a clean wall: a clean, neutral background (white, grey, beige) ensures yourself or your products remain the focal point
  • Use a tripod: this prevents the camera shake, ensures consistent images, and allows you to move the products, props, or yourself freely
  • Capture multiple angles: showcasing different perspectives increases customer confidence and connection
  • Apply the rule of thirds (iPhones literally have a grid feature you can switch on): this technique enhances visual appeal and keeps the subject in focus
  • Edit, edit, edit: tools like Adobe Lightroom (or apple photos app) can refine brightness, contrast, and sharpness

convinced, yet?

In conclusion, high-quality product photography is no longer optional for businesses looking to thrive online—it’s a necessity. From boosting sales to building trust and elevating your brand, the importance of product photography speaks for itself.
